Online retail sales tax windfall won’t be one for Wisconsin coffers
Could be just a pile of money that state and local governments will soon collect after a Supreme Court ruling on online sales.
The high court has ruled that governments can start collecting sales taxes from online retailers much more broadly than in the past.
Great for brick and mortar retailer price competitiveness, says La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, Vicki Markussen. But good for state and local government tax coffers as well.
“These are sales tax dollars that our state has not collected and that ripples down to the county level as well. They’re missing that half percentage of sales tax [on retail sales],” said Markussen.
On Monday, Wisconsin governor Scott Walker said, while the state would collect the sales taxes from online retailers, any revenue generated would be offset with tax cuts elsewhere.
The new sales tax revenue is estimated to be $123 million to $187 million per year in the state.
