“Chicken or egg” debate over nature of Center design complicates expansion plan

Is it a design, or a concept?

A battle over words emerged Tuesday during a meeting of the La Crosse Center Board.

Park board director Steve Carlyon is among the people who want the board to make clear whether the box-like extension planned into Riverside Park is a concept that can be changed, or a design that has gotten final approval.

Board member Jessica Olson also sits on the city council, and she asked the board to clarify some issues before the council meets again, such as who intends to donate money for the $49 million project.

Olson says citizens have gotten the idea that the plan to extend the Center into Riverside Park is a “done deal.”

Center board president Brent Smith says the extension is just a concept, which is still scheduled to come back to the park board for more study.
