Got rain? Canopy’s the answer for Riverside park bandstand

First it was TUGG last week. Now, GReg Balfany this week. Two consecutive acts moved off the stage of the bandstand at Riverside park in La Crosse in less than a week due to weather.

Two good Moon Tunes concerts that probably could have gone on as planned with a proposed canopy for the bandstand that’s part of a big fundraising push right now.

A canopy that still has a ways to go to get final approval, says Moon Tunes organizer, Terry Bauer.

“It looks absolutely gorgeous if we can get this through the bureaucracy of government to get the approvals we need,” Bauer said.

The Heritage Preservation Commission embraced the canopy concept at a meeting last week and will give the structure a final vote next month.

The park board also has to appove.  As does the city plan commission.  And the city council.

But the end result, designed by architect Roald Gundersen, will make a big difference, says Bauer.

“It would be a huge advantage acoustically.  It would be great advantage for protection for anything over than just a light mist,” he said.

It’s a half million dollar project for which money will be raised privately. After it’s built,  the canopy will be donated to the city.
