La Crosse law committee gives green light to marijuana referendum

One La Crosse County committee approved having a marijuana referendum on the November ballot but the vote isn’t unanimous.

The county’s judiciary and law committee endorsed plans Tuesday to ask voters whether marijuana should be legal in Wisconsin.

Vicki Burke was the one committee member who abstained. Vurke serves on the county heroin task force and said she’s disappointed that county leaders didn’t consult the task force before seeking a referendum.

County Board chair Tara Johnson said the legalization is a policy issue, which would not normally go before a task force.

The county’s executive committee could take a vote Wednesday morning on the referendum plan, and the full county board could vote next week on whether the referendum will move ahead.
