Down to just hundreds of ash trees and stumps on boulevards in La Crosse

The last few ash trees in La Crosse are getting taken down.

The 300 left on the city’s boulevards are pretty much the last ones standing of the thousands that were there before the Emerald Ash Borer infestation came to town just a few years ago.

The city awarded an $18,000 contract this week to grind a few hundred stumps of trees that have already been cut.

After the last trees are taken down, crews will survey the city to see if they’ve missed any.

After that, landowners that treated their ash trees will likely get leaned on by the city to have those removed, too.
