Trempealeau Co. DA says sheriff candidate is behind recall drive
The district attorney of Trempealeau County believes that the recall campaign against him was “master-minded” by a candidate for county sheriff.
In a news release, DA Taavi McMahon charges that Kevin Deeren started the recall drive for “self-serving political interests.”
Deeren is running for the open seat of sheriff in the fall election, and has been a sheriff’s officer in Trempealeau County, after serving on the Chicago Police Department.
McMahon claims that Deeren “collected over one-third of the signatures” on recall petitions, and will decide what candidate would challenge McMahon in a recall race.
The prosecutor, who has been on medical leave and hopes to return to work full-time soon, argues that Deeren wants to choose his own DA.
Recall signatures are still being reviewed by state election officials.
If there is a recall vote, it would probably happen a few weeks before the regular November election.
