He was one of a kind, and he will be missed. U.S. Senator John McCain was an American hero, who lived in service to his country. And he did so, almost always, with tremendous grace. Held as a prisoner of war while serving in the United States Navy in Vietnam, McCain sacrificed his own safety to protect his fellow prisoners and was held and tortured for five years. Yet, he had enough grace to later lead efforts to reconcile relations with the country that tortured him. As a politician, McCain followed the same principles of duty, honor, country. He proudly served his state of Arizona in the United States Senate for 32 years. He was deeply rooted in decency and character. . He fought in the U.S. Senate for things that were just and right, like the McCain Feingold campaign finance reform. Like McCain, that law isn’t perfect, but he stood on principle to do what he felt was best for his country. His country. Which he always put above partisan politics. He was a maverick who aspired to do what is right. He acted with grace when he reminded a woman at a rally that his opponent in the presidential race was not an Arab, but in fact an American. He served and defended our nation and its principles John McCain was an American hero, at a time when it seems there aren’t many of those left anymore. Godspeed John McCain.
