From flooding to mudslides, the best thing to do is avoid the area
Nearly 50 roads were closed this Tuesday morning in Vernon County due to flooding overnight.
Local street flooding really the only effects of Monday night’s rains within the city of La Crosse.
La Crosse Police Sergeant Tom Walsh said the advice for facing any flooded road is the same.
“We just ask people to turn around, stay safe,” Walsh said. “Don’t get caught up in it. Get away from it.
“Be patient. This water will subside. We’ll get these roads back up and going again.”
Many still found ways to get caught in the high water when the rain started to fall Monday night.
The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office said most of the closures are due to water still over the roads.
Some roads, however, have washed out and will need significant repair before getting open again.
That’s a big problems in Coon Valley with Highway 14 closed from both sides of the village.
A mudslide blocked off access from the west and water over a bridge closed the highway from the east.
Highway 162 was also closed north of the village and Highway 35 was closed in three different sections because of high water. Here’s a view of what that looked like Tuesday morning.
More than two dozen roads were closed in Monroe County according to the sheriff’s department. Five of those because bridges have washed out.
