WAFER Food Pantry ready to assist those in need suffering from flood damage

The need for food for those in financial difficulties living in the La Crosse area is constant.

That need rises even more when a natural disaster strikes, like the recent flood.

Erin Waldhart, director of the WAFER Food Pantry in La Crosse, said they are ready to assist once families get situated.

“We do serve the southern La Crosse County area which would be more impacted then where we are,” Waldhart said. “For a lot of people they’re still assessing the damage. They’re going to know that we are here as a resource for them as they move forward.”

Waldhart added that in the case of major flooding, often times customers are looking to replace all the contents of their fridge.

Almost a foot of rain wreaked havoc on towns and villages in the Coulee Region, leading to about 2,000 Xcel Energy Customers without power.

Waldhart said their building, which had sustained major flooding damage, as well, held up thanks to a construction project completed just two weeks ago.

“They did sandbags and it came over the sandbags and into the building,” Waldhart said. “But the damage and cleanup was really minimal compared to what we’ve seen in years past.”
