Shelby still waits for disaster relief from past years

Communities hit by natural disasters always hope that they can get government relief quickly.

But the wheels of government can grind slowly after an emergency.

Carroll Vizecky, town administrator in Shelby, said his community is still waiting for disaster funding from a few years ago.

“I actually have a project yet from 2015 that we’re trying to work through,” Vizecky said Thursday morning on WIZM. “I believe that will come full circle by the first of October, finally.”

Vizecky added that Shelby still hasn’t gotten money from FEMA for disaster relief from flooding in July of 2017, and that’s causing stress for local government workers and contractors on those relief projects:

“Again, the requirements to have the three bids, make sure we operate within the restraints of the FEMA viewers of these particular projects,” he said.

Vizecky said Shelby officials might have to make changes in the project plans in hopes of getting approval faster for that federal funding.
