A 34-year-old La Crosse woman was in the hospital after speeding through the West Avenue-State Street intersection between 60-80 mph around 11 p.m. Friday, according to police.

Rachelle Mac Ewen was headed north on West Avenue  where the speed limit is 25 mph  in her Honda Civic where she ran the red light and collided with a truck. She was travelling so fast she went over the median, past the opposite sidewalk for another block, then into some campus housing yards before being stopped by a tree.

Paramedics had to use the Jaws of Life to remove Mac Ewen, who was bleeding badly. She was then taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, before being released.

Police, who have received several speeding and hit-and-run complaints, said it was fortunate nobody was killed in the accident, since a lot of college students were in the area having returned for the school year.

Mac Ewen charged with reckless driving, recklessly endangering safety, imprudent speed and driving without insurance.
