Service van takes on $6,000 parking ramp video screen
La Crosse’s parking utility experienced its first casualty among the new video monitors hung in downtown parking ramps.
The screens were installed in July at a cost of $6,000 each. Much of that cost, we were told, was because of the heavy duty, industrial nature of the screens.
That got tested Wednesday when a service van slammed into the bottom of one of the monitors hanging in the Main Street ramp.

The driver came to the ramp to pick up some sub sandwiches right around noon. He happened to realize he couldn’t get out the regular State Street exit because of the low clearance. He didn’t happen upon that realization while trying to leave through the 3rd Street entrance.
The van, of course, was too tall to fit under the screen, which is hung at about seven feet above the concrete.
Traffic in and out of the ramp was blocked for about an hour while crews worked to free the van.
The screen was removed for repairs. The van is sporting a sizable dent.
