Doyle believes La Crosse area will decide governor and Senate races

Red Wave, Blue Wave? Wisconsin might not see either type of one-party wave in the November election, according to Onalaska lawmaker Steve Doyle.

In the races for U.S. Senator and governor, Democrat Doyle says voters in the 3rd Congressional District is unique in how it votes.

“These are people that don’t affiliate completely with either the Democratic party or Republican party,” Doyle said. “They vote for the particular candidate. They’re much more independent in that regard. They’re the ones that are really going to determine the outcome of this election.”

But Doyle says he is seeing enthusiasm growing among area Democrats, who generally seem to have little interest in the midterm elections.

“What we’re hearing at this point is there seems to be an enthusiasm level that is going to bring the Democratic turnout up to and maybe exceeding that of the Republicans (in) a non-presidential year, really tips the scale,” he said.

Because metro areas, including Madison and Milwaukee, tend to vote predictably from year to year, Doyle thinks the 3rd District will decide who wins the races for governor and U.S. Senate.

“In the 3rd District, if they like Evers, he’s going to be governor, if they like Walker, he’s going to be governor,” Doyle said. “They are much more fluid than any other part of the state.”

Doyle says the La Crosse area is not predictable, because it went for Donald Trump two years ago, while still electing Democrats locally.
