La Crosse city council makes Indigenous Peoples Day official
They’ve made it official. La Crosse’s city council members voted nearly unanimously to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day, rather than Columbus Day on the second Monday of October every year.
The council vote came with only one abstention Thursday night.
Mayor Tim Kabat and La Crosse school superintendent Randy Nelson joined in a proclamation declaring this last Monday, Indigenous Peoples Day.
The city council enshrined the act into city codes permanently with the vote.
La Crosse joins just a few dozen other local governments in the nation to adopt Indigenous Peoples Day, along with Minnesota, Vermont, Alaska and South Dakota (which celebrates Native American Day).
