La Crosse city clerk urges early registration for fall election

Looking down the barrel of long lines for those wanting to register on election day, La Crosse’s city clerk is hoping those voters opt to get registered earlier.

While it’s great that 800 people have registered to vote online since the August election, Teri Lehrke says, “We know there are many more people who need to register, who historically wait until election day.”

That number has run into the thousands in recent elections.

For the November 2014 election, 4,338 people registered on election day. Two years ago, that number had jumped to 6,000.

The deadline for online registration in Wisconsin is 11:59 p.m. Wednesday. In-person absentee voting started Monday in La Crosse’s city hall.

You can both check your registration status and register to vote at MyVote.WI.gov.
