Surge in home break-ins have police urging security measures

It’s not at the level of a citywide crime spree just yet.

But break-ins, especially around college campuses are on the rise, according to La Crosse Police Sergeant Tom Walsh.

Walsh mentioned simple things to prevent perps from easily entering your home, like locking the doors and windows. But, there were other ways to combat thieves, like recording serial numbers, along with makes and models of anything of value, such as electronics.

“Having those serial numbers at the ready is really, really helpful,” Walsh said.

Frequently, break-ins are reported at homes that have been left open during the day while residents are at work or school.
