Yesterday in La Crosse
JFK was the big story, but not the only story, on 11/22/63
The assassination of President John Kennedy on November 22nd, 1963 was the headline story on the final edition of the La Crosse Tribune that Friday. The Trib was still an afternoon paper at the time, costing 10 cents. The front page showed a photo of the new president, Lyndon Johnson…a stock photo of Johnson smiling, and wearing a bowtie.
Tribune reporter Jerome Rosso was also pictured on the front page, talking with two older men about the Kennedy shooting.
Jake Hoeschler was planning to add 64 rooms to the Holiday Inn on the pike…next to the Holiday Lanes bowling alley, now home to the Company Store.
The #1 song in America that week was “I’m Leaving It Up to You,” by Dale and Grace.
And La Crosse had a high of 59 degrees on the 22nd…a record for that date which stood for almost 50 years.
