The sport is growing and Holmen High School is looking to set the tone.

Girls wrestling at the school is taking off.

“Look out, it’s coming,” Holmen coach Jason Lulloff said. “The girls like it a lot. It’s really fun to watch them work really hard at this sport that’s always been seen as a guy’s sport.”

Numbers have jumped from six wreslters last year to 24 now. Lulloff has been sending calls and emails to everyone in the state, trying to get competition but it’s not easy.

“Teams aren’t growing as fast as on the east side of the state,” Lulloff said. “We’re kind of the pioneers on this side. That’s exactly what we wanted to do though. We’ve got some unique things to kind of showcase their hard work and efforts.”

The team right now is self funded, which becomes a challenge to get into tournaments and other meets.

Luloff says that if he can’t get the girls into other meets, they’ll be wrestling each other at home meets to get fans a chance to see them.

The WIAA still has not sanctioned girls wrestling as its own sport.
