A fatal highway crash over a year ago near Holmen has led to two La Crosse County court cases, which could be headed to trial.

Police say a commercial pump truck slammed into a Ford Explorer in August of 2017, killing Explorer driver Rebecca Berndt of Onalaska.

The other driver, Corey Bolstad, is charged with vehicular homicide, and investigators say he had heroin and meth in his system after the accident.

Bolstad is scheduled to go on trial in April.

But a civil suit also has been filed by Berndt’s estate against Bolstad and other parties.

No trial date is set for the lawsuit.

This week, an insurance company named as a defendant in the suit is asking to have the civil trial postponed until after Bolstad’s homicide trial is over.
