Local firefighters push green wreath fire safety campaign

Firefighters often are associated with the color red. Red sirens. Red trucks. But some local fire departments want you to think green this holiday season, instead.

The Campbell, LaCrescent, LaCrosse, and Onalaska Fire Department are announcing the 8th year of the �Keep the Wreath Green� campaign.

Starting this week each department has a large wreath displayed in front of their fire stations containing all green bulbs. If a fire occurs in any one of the four fire departments during this time period, one green bulb will be removed and replaced with a red bulb.

The goal is to keep the wreath green.

Each wreath will also have one white bulb to recognize men and women serving in the military.

Fires can come from all sorts of sources during the holiday season. Candle fires are pretty common as are holiday decorations. Christmas trees, sometimes located too close to a heat source, can be especially dangerous and cause cause hundreds of fires every holiday season.

Another very common type of holiday fire is cooking. Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.
