A Winona County woman accused of attempting to starve or harm her baby faces criminal charges in St. Paul.

Megan Kafer of Lewiston was arrested in July while her infant son was being treated at the St. Paul Children’s Hospital.

The child was severely underweight.

Using surveillance cameras, doctors say they saw Kafer putting something into the child’s feeding tube.

A syringe taken from Kafer by police was later found to contain laxative.

Investigators say Kafer’s phone had evidence of searches for ways to make a child sick.

Kafer’s next court hearing on a child endangerment charge in Ramsey County is scheduled for December.
