Fillmore County hog farm gets another hearing tonight, as residents worry of potential water contamination

MABEL, Minn.  It’s a case of big farming versus the threat of big environmental problems.

That conflict goes public again Tuesday night in Mabel, when the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) holds another hearing on whether a special study should be done on the chance of water contamination from a large commercial hog farm.

Cathy Rofshus from the MPCA says the developers supported an extension to Dec. 31 for the discussion period.

Many neighbors in the area are pushing for an impact statement, worried that manure storage at the feedlot could pose a danger to the region’s groundwater.

The MPCA will meet about whether to issue an environmental impact statement on the Catalpa feedlot project.
