La Crosse to retire another special taxing district, adds $20 million to tax rolls

After 20 years, another special tax incremental finance district — also known as a TID — is set to get retired in La Crosse.

The city’s economic development commission this week voted to close the special finance district at the International Business Park.

The complicated tax districts essentially use tax revenue from new development to pay for the work to move that development along.

TID No. 9, as it is known, will add just shy of $20 million to the tax rolls for the city, county, Western Technical College and the Onalaska School District in 2020.

The city has 11 currently active districts — 16 have been created in the city since the first one, downtown, about 40 years ago.
