Fatal accident, gunfire, police chase … busy weekend for city cops
La Crosse police were kept busy with an accident and a gunfire incident over the weekend.
A 71-year-old man died after being hit by a car Friday night on Mormon Coulee Road.
Police say a northbound car struck a pedestrian, who was walking across Mormon Coulee, around 9:30 p.m. Friday.
The pedestrian, William Smutny, was taken to a hospital where he later died.
The driver of the car tells police she did not see the man in the road.
On Saturday night, shots were fired outside some apartments along South Avenue, causing damage to the building walls.
A car reportedly used by the shooter was found a few hours later on West Avenue, and the driver took off when police got close.
The chase ended on Farnam Street, where three people got out of the car and tried to run.
Two men and a woman are now facing charges, including possession of stolen firearms and possession of meth.
