La Crosse schools busy developing safety plan for intruders

As part of the safety grants handed out to Wisconsin schools last year, part of the requirement was to develop a safety plan.

For the La Crosse School District, it is going through that process right now says safety director Scott Johnson.

“Each building will be a little bit different in unification points and evacuation points,” Johnson said. “Some of the buildings are getting to be a little bit outdated.

“Take each building’s plans and update them and make them a little more uniform from building to building.”

Involved in those planning discussions is the school leadership, as well as local police.

“We work with them very well here in La Crosse,” Johnson said of the La Crosse Police Dept. “We try to include them in all of our drills and all of our planning.”

Johnson added that the schools recently went through evacuation and lockdown drills to highlight where there was need for improvement.
