La Crosse lawyer gets 60-day suspension for financial misconduct

A La Crosse attorney will lose her law license for two months, as punishment for mishandling finances at her own law firm.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court is suspending the license of Sonja Davig for 60 days, starting in February, and orders her to pay $10,000 in costs to the state.

Investigators say Davig mishandled nearly $30,000 in a trust account, and tried to cover up the situation by using her own money.

Davig had her own law office in Holmen at the time, and said that personal problems and substance abuse had affected her behavior.

Since that investigation, Davig has closed the Holmen office and joined the Johns, Flaherty law firm in La Crosse, and has been in substance abuse recovery.

A state agency wanted Davig’s license suspended for a full year, but the Supreme Court decided that was excessive.
