A 26-year veteran of the La Crosse Fire Department has won recognition from his peers.

Capt. Greg Temp is the department’s “Firefighter of the Year” for 2018.

Temp was surprised by members of his family, including his parents, who attended the celebration Friday afternoon at the main fire station.

A committee of firefighters chooses the award winner from nominations within the department.

Temp said he was interested in joining the fire department when he was young and his father took him to a fire station for a visit.

He added that the department has a “lot of great people,” and he’s happy to be a part of it.
