More prisoners from Winona County could be sent to the Houston County jail in the near future.

The Winona County Board has approved a plan which would guarantee room in the Caledonia jail for at least 15 inmates from Winona County, on a short-term basis.

The state of Minnesota has ordered Winona County to close its current jail by the fall of 2021 unless improvements or other arrangements for housing prisoners are made.

The county jails in Wabasha and Red Wing also could take more prisoners from Winona, under plans now being discussed by several counties.
