A Holmen man, accused of sexually assaulting and trying to strangle a woman, will be examined for competency.

Bond for Michael Jones is $10,000 cash.

A criminal complaint says the 37-year-old assaulted a woman at his apartment and attempted to choke her twice.

The victim said Jones has been paranoid about people wanting to kill him, and he reportedly claimed that a motorcycle gang is drugging him with “happy juice.”

In court Wednesday, Jones told Judge Ramona Gonzalez that he has tried to get his ex-wife to help him post bail or find an attorney but she would not.

Jones said he knows he’s “going to do time” for the charges.

Also in court Wednesday, no change was made in the bond for one of two brothers accused of committing an armed robbery in north La Crosse.

Timothy Ellis remains jailed under a $5,000 cash bond.

Ellis and his brother, Justin, allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint on the street in January and shot into the victim’s car.

Gonzalez denied a bond reduction for Timothy and apologized for not being able to find a public defender for him, saying the state legislature should provide more money for the court system.

She added that Ellis’ bond will remain high because the charges are serious, and there is a high risk that he might not show up for court if released.
