Billings receives statewide honor for promoting “scenic byways”

The Great River Road is famous as a tourist destination in this region, but there are more local roads and highways which could attract visitors. 

State Rep. Jill Billings of La Crosse sponsored a law passed years ago that expands the definition of ‘scenic byways’ in Wisconsin.    

As a result, a group called ‘Citizens for a Scenic Wisconsin’ chose Billings to receive its annual award for 2019. 

Billings says her scenic byways bill got bi-partisan support shortly after her election in 2011, at a time when the two parties were still fighting over the passage of Governor Scott Walker’s Act 10 union bill.    

Billings also believes her service on the state tourism council contributed to getting the award.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
