Billings receives statewide honor for promoting “scenic byways”
The Great River Road is famous as a tourist destination in this region, but there are more local roads and highways which could attract visitors.
State Rep. Jill Billings of La Crosse sponsored a law passed years ago that expands the definition of ‘scenic byways’ in Wisconsin.
As a result, a group called ‘Citizens for a Scenic Wisconsin’ chose Billings to receive its annual award for 2019.
Billings says her scenic byways bill got bi-partisan support shortly after her election in 2011, at a time when the two parties were still fighting over the passage of Governor Scott Walker’s Act 10 union bill.
Billings also believes her service on the state tourism council contributed to getting the award.
