Former La Crosse Diocese official gets probation for sexual assault of child

A former assistant school superintendent for the Diocese of La Crosse has been sentenced to jail and probation, for sexually assaulting a child in a Wausau area case. 

Steven Smolek, who has a La Crosse address, pled guilty Wednesday in Marathon County Court to charges of having sex with a child 16 or older, and exposing himself to a child. 

The 60-year-old Smolek is ordered to serve nine months in jail, and he’ll be on probation for four years. 

Before serving as a school administrator in the La Crosse Diocese office, Smolek worked four years as district administrator in Mauston, and spent much of his career in Mosinee.      

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
