10-year-old from Fitchburg captures Badger spelling title

A 10-year-old girl from the Madison area is Wisconsin’s top speller for this year.

Maya Jadhav of Fitchburg won the Badger Spelling Bee in Madison on Saturday by correctly spelling ‘lapilli,’ a word that describes volcanic cinders.

The top three spellers from the state bee advance to the Nationals, happening in Washington this May.

In second place was Immanuel Goveas of Menomonee Falls, one of two Wisconsin co-champions last year.

Third place went to Aryan Kalluvila of Richfield,

Finishing just out of the top three, in fourth place, was the winner of the West Salem regional bee, Harsimranpreet Virk of Holmen.

She was one of four spellers from the CESA-4 bee who competed in the state finals.
