The Mississippi River continues to fall slowly in La Crosse, and it could level off by Tuesday night before possibly rising again by the weekend, after a predicted snowstorm.

The river at La Crosse is down more than a foot from its crest level of 14.5 feet last week. It could settle at a stage of just above 13 feet for the next day or two.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service think the water could rise to 13.4 feet by late Friday night, if the area gets rain or snow before then.

The city may still be on the low end of the snowfall expected in the region.

The latest weather service prediction calls for 2 to 3 inches of snow in La Crosse between early Wednesday morning and Thursday night.

Heavier snow, maybe up to a foot, is expected north of I-90, with less than an inch of snow predicted near the Illinois state line.
