‘What makes Wisconsin, Wisconsin?’

That’s what the state historical society is asking folks from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi, as they plan a new history museum for the Capitol Square in Madison.

On Wednesday, the society had a listening session at the La Crosse Public Library.

About 50 forums throughout the state are planned, to get ideas for the project.

The plan to rebuild the existing museum, in an old storefront, would cost $100 million, according to Historical Society director Christian Overland.

Suggestions for Coulee Region history to be highlighted at the museum include displays about the rivers, the driftless area, the Hmong culture, and the brewery.
