Gundersen name added to UW medical campus in La Crosse

Gundersen is one of the best-known names associated with health care in Wisconsin. 

Now, that name is getting more attention from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. 

The school has formally added Gundersen to the name of its western Wisconsin campus for med students, now calling it Gundersen Health System Western Academic Campus.

The school’s dean, Dr. Robert Golden, was in La Crosse on Wednesday to help launch the new name.

Golden pointed out that many medical students, who come to the Gundersen facility in La Crosse for training, decide to stay in the area after earning their degrees. 

The La Crosse hospital has provided training for the Wisconsin health care students for about 35 years. 

Gundersen CEO Dr. Scott Rathgaber said, “Education is in our soul,” at the La Crosse facility.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
