Pius X would help, but it might not be enough, 47 years ago

In 1972, La Crosse city leaders made plans to buy the Pius X Catholic School for about $600,000. Eventually, it would become a public school called Erickson, on Mormon Coulee Road, to replace other closed schools.

The city council was making budget plans for 1973, which included expanding Riverside Park, and a renovation of the ‘leaky’ Memorial Pool.

‘I’m 1000 per cent for Tom Eagleton,’ said Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern. That was said just a few days before Eagleton, McGovern’s running mate, quit the ticket because of controversy over being treated by a psychiatrist in the past. Eagleton was replaced on the ticket by Kennedy family relative Sargent Shriver.

Also running in the ’72 elections, Minnesota State Senator and polka band leader Florian Chmielewski, who eventually became president of the State Senate, yesterday in La Crosse.
