Two local fire officials facing court dates this week — one for DUI, the other for child porn

There may be some closure Thursday in a couple of legal controversies involving area fire department leaders. 

Onalaska Fire Chief Billy Hayes is due in La Crosse County traffic court on charges of driving drunk and speeding. 

Hayes reached agreement with the city of Onalaska to a five-day suspension in the case, in which he allegedly tried to use his position to get police to drop charges. 

At La Crosse City Hall on Thursday, a council committee will consider a separation agreement with La Crosse Fire Division Chief Frank Devine, who’s accused of possessing child pornography. 

The agreement could be voted on by the full city council later in the evening.

Devine has a court date in his case on Friday.

    Wonder if the ‘separation agreement is about retirement benefits? Should the city pay a person life long benefits when they are accused of child porn involvement? He will get his Social Security benefits with ior without conviction but should he be paid city money also?
