A class designed to help families and friends of those suffering from addiction is about to start at the Coulee Recovery Center in La Crosse.

Get Your Loved One Sober will begin this week and run every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. through June 27.

The class in part focuses on how you can approach the addict.

“There are other alternatives to nagging and pleading and threatening”, Executive Director Cheryl Hancock says. “That’s oftentimes how you react because of how the disease is.”

Additionally, the program will try and assuage members from feeling any guilt, which Hancock said is often difficult to do.

“They didn’t cause this,” Hancock said. “Maybe as parents they think they failed their child. That makes us want to fix it. We can’t fix it, we can’t control it, and we can’t cure it. That responsibility lies with the addict.”

Participants would be required to purchase a book, available for a small fee.

Call the Coulee Recovery Center between 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. to register for the course.

I also act as the voice of local sports, doing play by play of high school and college football and basketball. When not working I enjoy golfing.
