For the second summer, Gundersen Health System of La Crosse is offering free meals to children ages 18 and under.

The meals begin June 6 at Gundersen’s cafeteria at 1900 South Avenue weekdays from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m..

The food students receive will not be skirting nutritional standards.

“The meal consists of whole grains, some fruits and vegetables along with dairy,” Nutrition and Hospitality Services Director Sara Ashbeck said. “During the breakfast time we offer great yogurt parfaits with fresh fruit in them.”

In the initial season, Gundersen officials realized the impact of the program.

“Last year was the first year we did this, and we were able to serve over 5,000 kids,” Ashbeck said.

The School District of La Crosse works closely with Gundersen to ensure that the program reaches as many children as possible who might need the services.

Weekend meals will also be offered this summer from 10:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

I also act as the voice of local sports, doing play by play of high school and college football and basketball. When not working I enjoy golfing.

Thanks to Gundersen for continuing this generous program this summer. I knew my son’s friends in the neighborhood depended and benefitted last year. No kid should ever go hungry!
