Copeland manhole needs emergency fix

It’s not a pothole that needs fixing in north La Crosse. It’s a sinkhole.

Monday, the city’s board of public works approved emergency repairs at the intersection of Copeland and Gould streets, near the overhead.

Utility manager Bernie Lenz said the manhole at the intersection failed, leading to a collapse of the road in that area.

The manhole reportedly dates back to 1909.

According to city records, the cost of the repair work is estimated at $43,000.

Lenz said high groundwater during the recent flooding has pushed up on some manholes throughout La Crosse.
