Room tax commission will be next stop for funding of La Crosse Center
Now that the La Crosse city council has approved a hike in the hotel room tax, where does the idea go next?
Mayor Tim Kabat said the local room tax commission will have to endorse the 9.5 percent tax given the OK last week by the council.
Raising the tax above the current 8 percent is designed to help fund the $42 million La Crosse Center expansion.
The 9.5 percent figure compares with room tax rates of 5 percent or lower in outlying communities such as Holmen and Campbell.
Kabat, however, still hopes to get some financial help from Onalaska and La Crosse County for the Center project.
The county and Onalaska are being asked to contribute a total of $150,000 a year for 20 years.

Why would these two entities contribute? They never had any say in the planning of the expensive La Crosse Center expansion. It’s like an afterthought by the mayor now that the horse is out of the barn so to speak. Question could be asked is why wasn’t funding in place first. That’s only fiscally responsible like how families have to plan! Easy to spend spend someone else’s money!
Now it looks like our taxes in La Crosse will increase again! We already have a lot higher taxes than surrounding communities. Most residents in the city are getting tired of being once again asked to bend over and grab their ankles!!!!!!!!!
