New tennis facility set to be built in Green Island Park
Construction for a new tennis facility will begin this year at Green Island Park in La Crosse.
The $3.5 million project is needed, according to city staff.
“With the combination of long term fixing at Forest Hills and the (University of Wisconsin-La Crosse) courts needing to be replaced now, we decided to get together and build something really nice for the community,” Jared Flick, with La Crosse Parks and Rec., said.
The city will fund 25 percent of the project. The rest will come from outside sources.
Ten outdoor courts will be built first. There are also plans for an indoor facility in phase two of the project.
The location is ideal to overseers of the construction.
“Not a heavy residential area or traffic other than from the hospital,” Flick said. “In the summertime when tennis is at its heaviest, the ice arena isn’t being used, so we have plenty of parking for players.”
Flick added that most courts around the city are full during the summer, and the new facility will add to the already impressive list of recreation options in La Crosse.
