La Crosse interim police chief expected to be picked Thursday

A temporary police chief for the La Crosse Police Department could be chosen Thursday.

The police and fire commission plans to pick an interim chief at a morning meeting.

Commission member Doug Happel said somebody will be needed to run the department for a short period, because the search process for a new chief could take several weeks.

Current Chief Ron Tischer will step down July 23, after a seven-year tenure. He will be leaving to head the police department in Payson, Arizona.

The commission also will discuss how the recruitment process will work.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
