County board follows Onalaska, turns down request to help with La Crosse Center costs

For the second time this week, a local municipality turned down the city of La Crosse to help fund the $42 million La Crosse Center expansion.

Thursday, the La Crosse county board failed to get enough votes to pass a resolution to donate $138,000 to the expansion from money created through a TID district.

County board supervisor Doug Weidenbach said the process was backwards.

“We don’t have a seat on the La Crosse Center Board.” Weidenbach said. “I know there will be a resolution to make us part of that, but if the incentive was for us to give them money it should have been done before that.”

Other members argued in favor, saying what’s good for La Crosse is good for the entire county.

In the end, Weidenbach explained he couldn’t justify the expense.

“Certainly the county could find a use for $138,000 for mandated services, such as health and human services,” Weindenbach said.

Eighteen out of the 25 board members in attendance voted in favor, but with four members absent, the two-thirds majority threshold wasn’t reached.
