Alternate-side parking gets a tryout, 60 years ago
A year-round policy for alternate side parking was put in place during the summer of 1959 in La Crosse. Police gave out 65-hundred warning tickets that June, an average of 200 a night. When the rule became official in July, only 69 tickets were actually written for the month. Now, the alternate-side rule is only used in La Crosse four months a year, from the middle of November to mid-March.
A change in cab companies was okayed by the city council. The license of Yellow Cab was transferred to Yellow Checker, because of an ownership change.
The Wisconsin State Fair celebrated Ladies’ Day with the first 2000 women entering the fairgrounds getting fresh orchids flown to the state from Hawaii. Just days earlier, Hawaii had been admitted as the 50th state in the union. That action made the new 49-star flags issued that summer immediately obsolete.
