Driftless Humane Society cat population spikes, homes and donations needed

The Driftless Humane Society in Viroqua is asking for food donations after a large influx in its feline population. The humane society said it has nearly 60 cats and kittens, so food is flying off the shelves.

“Some of our employees, myself included when the cupboards are really barren and we haven’t gotten much of any kind of donations, all of us on staff have gone out and bought a 32-can pack or a 16-pound bag of food just to help out,” Joanne Borden, kennel assistant, said.

Borden said they require dry cat food for all ages, as well as soft, pate food for younger kittens. She said the soft food make sit easier to give medicine or provide formula if the kittens are orphaned before they are weaned.

There is also an option for those in the community to foster pets before they are adopted.

“We wish we could get more people to foster any animals, dogs or cats, but we generally could use more people fostering cats and kittens than we normally have,” Borden said.

Those who foster pets can eventually decide to apply for adoption if desired.

Currently, the Driftless Humane Society is waiving adoption fees with a qualified donation.
