Dutch man to be tried in La Crosse for failing to go to jail

A man from the Netherlands is scheduled to be tried in La Crosse early next year for stalking and other charges. 

Gerwin Ferwerda is accused of coming to Wisconsin in 2018 to see the girlfriend he met on-line. 

Ferwerda allegedly hit the Onalaska woman’s car with a baseball bat and threatened her with a knife. 

The 23-year-old suspect has a January trial date, for failing to report to jail after being convicted on a previous charge. 

His jail term would have been about nine months.

Ferwerda has been jailed in La Crosse since late July, with a cash bond set at $10,000.  

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
