La Crosse continuing to develop greenways for better traffic safety

The city is currently installing traffic circles in three areas along King Street, including here at 8th and King.

More street construction seen in or near downtown La Crosse, including traffic circles, could be part of the greenway project.

The city has been working for a few years on areas where people can walk, bike or drive cars more safely, with three greenway projects in the works.

City council member Chris Kahlow said King Street is getting more attention for safety features, partly because of the new roundabout recently installed nearby at 7th and Cass.

Kahlow added that some traffic flow is “really great for cars,” but it doesn’t help pedestrians or bike riders.

Developing greenways involves street extensions and traffic circles, intended as ways to slow down cars in residential areas.
