Nobody likes getting parking tickets, especially around the holidays, but the city of La Crosse hopes to make parking a little less painful this Christmas.

The city board of public works has approved a holiday promotion called “Food for Fines.”

Greg Elsen, La Crosse’s new parking utility coordinator, introduced the idea Monday at a public works meeting.

Donations equal to the amount of a parking ticket will be accepted from between Dec. 2-30.  Donations could include food or new clothing, along with a receipt with the cost of the item.

Elsen says the city has already met its parking budget for 2019, so they don’t expect to miss much revenue from fines in December.

The donated “Food for Fines” items will be given to local shelters.
