A Monroe County couple, arrested over a year ago for forcing their children to sit in cages, will go to trial next summer.

A two-week trial is scheduled to start July 6 for Travis and Amy Headrick of Melvina, Wis.

The Headricks were charged with child abuse and neglect in the summer of 2018 for allegedly keeping their kids, aged 10 and older, in homemade cages for hours at a time.

The parents claim they confined the children to protect them from injuring themselves or each other.

The Headricks had been scheduled to reach a plea agreement this month, but chose to go on trial instead.
